A MODERN AND CREATIVE FLOWER SCHOOL TEACHING SEASONAL & SUSTAINABLE FLORISTRY IN SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND, NEAR GLASGOW

WELCOME TO OUR FLOWER SCHOOL

Our flower school is based in South Lanarkshire, near the village of Eaglesham and a short drive from central Glasgow. The flower school is hosted in our 52 square metre studio in a converted stable block, now a bespoke floral studio, and a stone’s throw away from the field where we grow our flowers. It is a bright, spacious, inspirational, and calming space which is full of flowers, vases, and flower arranging tools.

Throughout the year, we deliver a programme of sustainable floristry workshops and courses that celebrate natural, seasonal flowers, combining the art of garden-style flower arranging with practical tuition on sustainable, foam-free and plastic-free mechanics. Each workshop offers detailed instructions covering the core skills and the tuition required to create a range of floristry designs; from delicate bouquets, to wild and gestural arrangements, sculptural installations, intricate wearable accessories, botanical dyeing, and career and business skills. Sessions begin with a demonstration, followed by supportive and constructive feedback for each student and their work. We teach naturalistic floral design
covering a variety of different topics and facets of the industry from professional floristry to arranging at home, growing your own flowers, cutting and conditioning flowers, sustainability, running a floristry business, event work, and photography.

Our flower school is a haven of creativity, full of flowers and sparkling energy, where people come to learn something new, relax in a calm environment, be creative, brush up their floristry skills, start a career in sustainable floristry, meet with like minds, or to simply be around flowers.

OUR TEACHING APPROACH

Our aim is to provide every student with a unique, immersive and creative learning experience. We teach you the core skills to achieve naturalistic flower arrangements - from creating bouquets using the “twist” and “hand vase” techniques, to utilising ancient methods with kenzans and moss, to using chicken wire to create armatures to hide water vessels, and many more of our innovations that we have developed over four decades in the industry. We provide support and inspiration in developing your own floral style and encourage you to develop confidence and flair by slowly building your taste and experience. We encourage you to experiment with colour, proportion, shape, symmetry and asymmetry, and to freely apply the techniques you have learnt, exploring your personal connection with flowers in a creative and inspiring space.

OUR MATERIALS

Every workshop we deliver is seasonally focused, arranging with what is readily available naturally and locally - from our own flower field in the South Lanarkshire countryside and the hedgerows and woodlands surrounding it. We believe by allowing yourself to be attuned to nature, its seasons and imperfections, your arrangements will in turn be more authentic and more beautiful. You will have the opportunity to experience the beauty and variety of garden flowers in all of their glory, character, form, texture, scent, and colour. This is a chance to slow down, focus and celebrate a particular moment in the year. Whenever you choose to visit our flower school, you will be surrounded by extraordinary natural materials – wild, blooming, characterful, edible, scented, and even nourishing to the skin.

OUR ETHOS

Sustainability is at the centre of everything we do, it informs the way we run our flower school and the type of floristry we teach. We believe it is our responsibility to find ways to care for our environment, whilst simultaneously considering human wellbeing and the ecological health of our planet and to raise awareness and teach others to do the same. In our business, we scrutinise all of our choices in order to reduce our carbon footprint, limit our waste, utilise eco-friendly methods and materials, and manage our water use. In practice, sustainability within our flower school is concerned with teaching eco-friendly, zero waste and seasonal floristry that is tangible and feasible for our students to follow in their own practices. To be sustainable in business, we believe in being profitable in a way that profit is never prioritised over people or planet. We are committed to reviewing our practices, thinking creatively and sustainably about the way in which we work in all facets of our business and always thinking about the ways in which we can adapt and do better. We sow, nurture and harvest our own flowers for all of our workshops and events each year using natural methods and gentle farming without the use of chemicals or pesticides creating a safe haven for bees and other pollinators. We have been appointed as Industry Leaders representing Scotland and the UK for the Sustainable Floristry Network for our design and business practices, our voice within the industry and media, and through our role as educators. SFN is a global industry initiative endorsed by a collective of experienced florists from around the world guiding floristry “back to nature”.
